Mercury captures esteemed Australian jazz pianist Alister Spence in a moody yet utterly compelling zone. A largely improvised set featuring Lloyd Swanton (acoustic bass) and Toby Hall (drums and glockenspiel), this album embraces the conversational, cross-genre aspects of contemporary jazz—and the interaction can be stormy. “Momentum” launches into a Jerry Lee Lewis-esque piano attack before the furor dies down and the bass and drums gently begin a busy interplay of their own. But when the trio truly coheres—like on the post-rock odyssey “Luminescence”—Mercury explodes.
