Sydney-based producer/singer/songwriter Xavier Dunn has a background in classical performance and composition, which may explain why he’s so adept at wrangling instruments and samples into a cohesive whole. On his 2016 debut EP, he gave songs by Kanye West and Iggy Azalea a sombre, Bon Iver-esque acoustic makeover, but Isic Tutor is his debut EP of original material. The five-song effort can occasionally uplift (“Well”) but often feels icy (“Nightmares”, “Warming”), with lyrical references ranging from tumultuous relationships to video-game characters—sometimes in the same song, in the case of the title track.
