Jagged Edge have chiselled a new profile for R&B in the era after rap's ascendance. During uptempo songs like “He Can't Love U”, the band's nimble singers subdivide the beat as well as any progressive MC could, and they deftly switch from rapping to balladry during sultry numbers such as “What You Tryin' to Do”. In collaborations with Ja Rule (“Girl Is Mine”) and John Legend (“Seasons Change”), Jagged Edge have proved their cross-genre flexibility; the hook of “Walked Outta Heaven” even inspired avant-garde footwork producer DJ Rashad.
