About Mattias Schulstad

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Hearing my first teacher play the study in B minor, Op.35, No.22, by Fernando Sor, I discovered polyphony and the magic of the guitar. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Glenn Gould, Jaime Laredo, Leonard Rose, Bach: The 6 Sonatas for Violin & Harpsichord, BWV 1014-1019 - The 3 Sonatas for Viola da gamba & Harpsichord, BWV 1027-1029 Göran Söllscher, The Renaissance Album Khatia Buniatishvili, Motherland Glenn Gould and Jamie Laredo lets this glorious Bach music be heard with crisp perfection and human warmth. My teacher Göran Söllscher’s The Renaissance Album is in my view sublime. Buniatishvili’s Sheep May Safely Graze is the best I’ve heard. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Nocturne Op.9 No.2 (Arranged by Francisco Tárrega/Mattias Schulstad)” To hear Chopin on the guitar presents his music in an intimate light. And to hear his nocturne Op.9 No.2, as first arranged by the father of the modern guitar, Francisco Tárrega, tells the story of how the guitar came to be as we know it today. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I’ll never forget the moment when I first felt a connection to an audience. I was 15 years old and played Villa-Lobos’s first prelude. To be present among a group of people as music unfolds, feels like connecting to a common subconscious. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I’d like to grow my ability to generate traction with a listener. That between one note and the next is a story that’s rewarding to hear, both today and tomorrow.
