1970s Film Stock

About 1970s Film Stock

Producing artful, abstract soundscapes with electric guitar and a wealth of electronics, 1970s Film Stock is the project of musician and recording engineer Eddie Garcia. Based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Garcia was a preteen when he first began playing guitar, and by age 13 he was recording his own material using his family's VCR. In his teens, he divided his time between playing in bands, teaching himself the basics of recording, and running sound for other local groups. In 2004, Garcia helped found a band called Jews & Catholics, a hard-edged indie rock outfit that earned a loyal following on the Winston-Salem club scene. Several years into Jews & Catholics' run, Garcia landed a job at Winston-Salem public radio station WFDD-FM, where he worked as an engineer, producer, and reporter specializing in arts coverage. In 2014, Jews & Catholics broke up, largely due to the other life commitments of the bandmembers, and Garcia began working on material that was more experimental and personal than what he'd been playing with his band. Performing solo with an array of effects boxes, Garcia dubbed his new project 1970s Film Stock, and he released his first album under the rubric, Hand Painted, in August 2015. A single, "Palace Number 3," followed a year later, and 1970s Film Stock's second full-length album, Birds, arrived in August 2017. ~ Mark Deming
