About Elizabeth

Known professionally as Elizabeth, Australian singer/songwriter Elizabeth Mitchell first gained recognition fronting the inventive Melbourne indie pop band Totally Mild, who released a pair of critically acclaimed albums in the latter half of the 2010s before disbanding in 2019. Embracing a lusher and more expansive pop sound, Elizabeth launched a solo career that same year with the release of her debut album, The Wonderful World of Nature. With her expressive, crystalline voice and smart pop sense, Mitchell added a luxuriant air to Totally Mild's atmospheric, surf-toned dream pop, which initially earned comparisons to bands like Mazzy Star and Beach House. The group made waves with their 2015 debut, Down Time, and followed it up three years later with the more sophisticated and ambitious Her, hinting at Mitchell's future approach. Billing herself simply as Elizabeth, she released her first solo single, the torchy "Burn It All," in August of 2018, months before Totally Mild called it quits in early the next year. A succession of additional singles like "Parties" and "Meander" arrived throughout 2019, with accompanying press billing Elizabeth as "a queer pop anti-heroine" and painting a moody yet glamorous portrait that was further depicted on her debut album, The Wonderful World of Nature, later that November. ~ Timothy Monger
