Group Doueh

About Group Doueh

Music from Western Africa has become more and more popular amongst not only world music aficionados but pop and rock music listeners who are drawn to the way the rhythms and melodies resonate and dovetail with Western music styles. Group Doueh, on the other hand, appeals to adventurous listeners for the opposite reason: they really don't sound like anyone else. Centered around guitarist Bamaar Salmou (aka Doueh) who take some cues from '60s psychedelic giants like Hendrix and Clapton as well as traditional Sahrawi and Mauritanian music, the band plays droning, modal jams that occupy the higher registers and resemble the sound of bees swarming. Percussion and male and female vocals (singing in Hassania) add to the musical stew, which hangs together but always sounds on the verge of falling into blissful cacophony. The band has been playing for years in the Western Sahara, but was introduced to the rest of the world via their excellent 2006 debut album, and a well-praised follow-up in '09, released by the Sublime Frequencies label.
