About Roi Anthony

Roi Anthony, aka Chip, is an impassioned R&B traditionalist who proudly represents his home state of Louisiana. Active since the 1990s, dating back to his work with the sibling act Le'Jit, the independent singer, songwriter, and producer has consistently recorded mature, polished R&B ranging from slow jams to message songs. His self-released albums, including his debut True Soul Experience (2007) and Gonna Do Me (2015), led to extensive work with Keith Sweat and continued solo growth with releases such as the two-step contemporary gospel single "So Good" (2018). A lifelong Louisianan, Roi Anthony -- sometimes credited under alternate spellings and nicknames such as Roy Anthony, Choklate Chip, and simply Chip -- is originally from Loreauville and spent time in New Orleans before he settled in Lafayette. He debuted during the latter half of the '90s as one-third of Le'Jit, a vocal group that has also featured his brothers John and Chris. Anthony branched out with an assortment of featured appearances and productions, and in 2007 made his proper solo debut with True Soul Experience, released on his MoHitz label. A version of the album contained "Long Way from Home," a nostalgic and hopeful song dedicated to Hurricane Katrina evacuees. A quick follow-up entitled True Soul Lifestyle arrived in 2008. Who Am I, what Anthony considers his second album, was released in 2011 and gained regional traction with "Why Don't People Slow Dance" and "Work It." Gonna Do Me, promoted with the like-titled single, followed in 2015. The solo output, combined with continued Le'Jit activity, writing, and production for other artists' projects on MoHitz, culminated in 2018 with Keith Sweat's Playing for Keeps, the majority of which he co-wrote and produced. Around the same time, Anthony issued his own "So Good," a natural move into contemporary gospel. ~ Andy Kellman
