b. 5 June 1951, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. While studying for a BA degree in Music Theory and Music Education at Minnesota Southwest State University, Vezner played bass and sang with various bands. On completion of his studies, he considered a career as a music teacher but when some of his songs were successfully sold to recording artists he moved to Nashville, Tennessee. There, his successes continued, leading to recordings by artists such as Faith Hill, Janis Ian, Reba McIntyre, John Mellencamp, Ronnie Milsap, Lorrie Morgan (who recorded ‘Train Wreck Of Emotion’, a song co-written with Alan Rhody), Clay Walker (who had a 1998 number 1 hit with ‘Then What’), and Kathy Mattea. He has also recorded with the latter, whom he married in 1988. Among his songs is ‘Where’ve You Been’, co-written with Don Henry, which brought Mattea a Country Music Association Female Vocalist Award, a Grammy for Best Female Country Performance and a gold record. The song also brought Vezner recognition including a Grammy for Best Country Song and the Nashville Songwriters Association award as Song Of The Year while Vezner was himself named as the NSA Songwriter Of The Year. Among other songs Vezner has co-written are ‘A Few Good Things Remain’, ‘If I Didn’t Love You’ (a Top 10 hit for Steve Warriner), ‘Time Passes By’, ‘Whole Lotta Holes’, ‘Ashes In The Wind’, ‘Who’s Gonna Know’ and ‘All Roads To The River’. With Paul Williams, Vezner wrote ‘You’re Gone’, recorded by Diamond Rio, and ‘I Know Him By Heart’, sung on television by Vonda Shepard over the closing titles of a season end episode of Ally McBeal. On the 2006 album Transitions, Vezner sings six songs and singer-songwriter Celeste Krenz sings another six.
