About Dan Brodie

Authentic barroom storytelling comes naturally to Dan Brodie, a veteran Australian singer-songwriter bringing a serrated rock edge to country and Americana traditions. Born in Melbourne in 1974, Brodie kicked around in local outfits as a teen with his older brother Chris, who co-founded outsized rockers Dallas Crane in the mid ’90s and has continued to grace many of Brodie’s backing bands over the years. That includes The Broken Arrows, who helped to both update and animate Brodie’s vintage rockabilly influences on his 2002 major-label debut, Empty Arms Broken Hearts. Earning two ARIA nominations, that breakthrough record led to a hearty mix of solo and full-band efforts, plus a 2015 live album that doubled as a potent career retrospective. Brodie then christened a new chapter with the diverse 2017 covers collection Lost Not Found and 2019’s mournful Funerária Do Vale, inspired by a six-month stint in Rio de Janeiro. Brodie deepened that self-reflective streak on 2023’s The Ballad of Cowboy Dan, exploring spoken-word passages and a softer overall delivery while still making room for winking braggadocio and a pub-worthy strut on “I’m the Shit.”
