About RIAS Kammerchor

The name of the RIAS Kammerchor (RIAS Chamber Choir) reminds listeners of the divided nature of Berlin when the ensemble was founded in 1948. Rundfunk im amerikanischen Sektor (Radio in the American Sector) was the city’s U.S.-managed German-language station, and the choir was convened as a regional broadcasting ensemble, initially specializing in the cantatas and larger works of Bach. It soon established a reputation beyond Berlin and abroad, not least for its stated mission to promote contemporary choral music; composers whose works it has premiered include Hindemith, Krenek, Boulez, and Henze. In recent years it has restated its commitment to Baroque and early music under chief conductors Daniel Reuss (2003-06), Hans-Christoph Rademann (2007-15), and Justin Doyle (since 2017). Comprising 34 professional singers, the RIAS Kammerchor works with Germany’s period-instrument groups and ensembles such as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under conductors including Rinaldo Alessandrini, René Jacobs, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Simon Rattle.
