At 28, Richard Goode pupil and Curtis alumnus Yekwon Sunwoo swept up the Gold Medal at the 2017 Van Cliburn Competition in Fort Worth, Texas with a series of performances of maturity and technical prowess. This album gathers together some of the music he played, with the highlight being a remarkably assured reading of Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Sonata. Among the more obvious competition fare, there’s a beautifully done rendition of Percy Grainger’s ravishing take on Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, and shorter pieces by Schubert and Haydn.
