Preludes

Preludes

Marthe De La Torre looks heavenward with a warm, openhearted spirit on her debut album, Preludes. The native Norwegian singer/songwriter brings to mind thoughtful Christian artists like Sara Groves and Audrey Assad as she blends electronic textures with acoustic instrumentation in these tracks. De La Torre has a clean-edged, slightly Scandinavian-accented voice with pleasing range and timbre. Her melodies have a folk/pop feel, though “Trust in You” (featuring singer Butta P.) has a jazzy sort of shimmer and “Your Love Is Crazy” radiates a bright R&B glow. Lyrically, Preludes is a straight-ahead worship project, avoiding grandiose rockers and arena chants in favor of more intimate hosannas and songs of contemplation. “Glorious” (an atmospheric celebration of God’s majesty), “Hallelujah” (a piano ballad with a yearning edge), and “Greatest Sacrifice” (dramatic and stirring, with soulful guest vocals from Edward Rivera) are typical of the variety and depth of feeling here. De La Torre closes the album with “Laer Meg Å Kjenne,” a traditional Norwegian hymn rendered with a strikingly modern touch.
