Carry Me Home

Carry Me Home

Christian singer/songwriter Ali Matthews upholds her high standards on Carry Me Home, her sixth album of faith-rooted folk/pop tunes. Matthews has a caressing voice with considerable underlying strength; her melodic sense and lyric sharpness put her in a class with Sara Groves and Nichole Nordeman. As a writer, she doesn’t mind confessing weakness — tunes like “Whole Again (The Humpty Dumpty Song)” and “Break God’s Heart” touch upon fallen human nature and the healing power of salvation. She’s equally adept at vivid sketches of ordinary life (“Tourist”) and simple statements of praise (“Give Me Jesus”). Musically, the album veers from smooth pop (“Somewhere Beyond”) to jazzy grooves (“A Little Faith”) and country waltzes (the title number). Insightful renditions of Bruce Cockburn’s “All The Diamonds in the World” and Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love” fit nicely with the originals. Carry Me Home is a straightforward album carried by Matthews’ engaging vocal style, well-rendered songs and overall depth of belief.
