On Sipho the Gift’s third outing, relentless raps and bright, rattling beats are balanced with darker introspective moments. “BOY” thrills with its jumpy energy and anti-defeatist protest theme. “ANYWHERE” may shimmer on the surface, but is really about love gone wrong: “We don’t love each other like we weren’t some best friends”, he says. “LAS PHuMA KHONA” is a grand and nostalgic salute to the style and flavour of ol’ skool Kwaito, and “EGO DEATH” is an honest encounter with the one vice that binds us all. Throughout, the emcee sounds relaxed, assured and unpretentious. This is his most concise work yet.
