Christian singer/songwriter Rachel Scott sings about struggle and salvation from a family perspective on Sons & Daughters. The Omaha-based artist’s latest release brings Sara Groves to mind in its homespun compassion and graceful melodic sense, with Scott adding her feel for soulful grooves to the mix. A note of reassurance runs through the tracks, heard in the prayerful gratitude of “This Is the Day,” the parental devotion of “For You” and the spiritual acceptance of “Tear Down the Wall.” That’s not to say that shadows don’t fall across the singer’s path — tracks like “Baby Hold On” and “All We Need” acknowledge everyday fears and doubts even as they find strength in God. Musically, the album ranges from beat-powered numbers like “All Things New” and “Orphan” to piano-centered hymns like “The Simple Things” and “I Yield.” Whatever the setting, the tracks benefit from Scott’s caressing, emotive voice, reminiscent at times of Sarah McLachlan in its lower range. The songs and the performances are of a piece: heartfelt, quietly confident, and unshakably reverent.
