No Time

For Soft Walls’ second release, the Brighton, U.K.–based Dan Reeves borrowed an eight-track recorder to increase fidelity and assembled these 10 hypnotic tunes. Besides running his label Faux Discx Records and playing in The Cold Pumas, Reeves finds the time to create and refine these songs of personal expression and reflection. If you weren’t aware of the solo status of the project, a track like the six-and-a-half-minute “Never Come Back Again” would seem like an excerpt from a hot, motorik-beat jam among bandmates, with “Early in the Day” providing the necessary relief to recover for the ghostly and fleeting title track. “The Big Nod” is aptly named. “All the Same” returns to an unrelenting beat, a cautiously moving organ, a howling electric guitar nearly buried in the mix, and vocals obscured by reverb. “Slumbering” provides another leisurely break in the action before the final three tracks provide closure. “Foot of the Stairs” suggests The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. “Guided Through” clings to The Cold Pumas’ approach and sound. The joyful keyboards of “Transient View” suggest the light at the end of the tunnel.
