The unfinished 1968-70 sessions for Jimi Hendrix’s fourth album left a wealth of potential material for compilers to sift through, a lot of which shows the influence of contemporary developments in funk and soul. “Freedom” is Sly Stone rock and “Dolly Dagger” cocks an ear to Curtis Mayfield, while “Night Bird Flying” has the swagger of the (newly funky) Stones with a Beatles-y “Lady Madonna” bassline. The sumptuous “Angel” is a sweet and thoughtful ballad, tinged with pathos and yearning.
