Reminisce: Oshe Naija

Since the release of his debut album Book of Rap Stories in 2012, Reminisce has remained a vital fixture in Nigerian hip-hop. For Oshe Naija, our celebration of the sounds of Nigeria, he plots a course through hip-hop’s Nigerian history, compiling a collection of tracks from Jahbless, Vector, Laycon, Ycee, ODUMODUBLVCK and more.  “One of the most significant developments in Nigerian hip-hop is the fusion of indigenous Nigerian sounds and languages with rap,” Reminisce tells Apple Music. “Artists like Lord of Ajasa, Dagrin, Nigga Raw, Ruggedman, Olamide and Phyno have played a crucial role in this evolution, incorporating elements of Yoruba, Igbo and other Nigerian languages into their music—giving birth to what became known as indigenous or street rap. The scene has evolved from its early stages heavily influenced by American rap to a genre that embraces its Nigerian cultural roots and caters to a diverse audience.” “It’s important to recognise the diversity within Nigerian hip-hop,” Reminisce explains, “and not generalise all artists or songs based on stereotypes. Nigerian hip-hop is a dynamic and evolving genre that reflects the multifaceted nature of Nigerian culture and society.”
