For alt-pop conceptualist Melanie Martinez, music is meant to be a multisensory experience. After all, the New York native’s first gig was in front of an audience of over 12 million, when she appeared on NBC’s The Voice as a teenager in 2012. While the show helped raise her profile, Martinez has thrived well on her own, creating alter ego Cry Baby—also the title of her 2015 debut—and a fanciful world of carnivalesque sounds, woozy electronics and childlike whimsy. Her vision evolved even further on 2019’s K-12, and its accompanying film is a warped electro-pop journey to a place where colorful dreams meet the darkest of realities.
