Top Songs of 2022: Sub-Saharan Africa

Apple Music’s end-of-year charts are based on plays between 1 November 2021 and 31 October 2022. In 2022, African music transcended borders, with artists across sub-Saharan Africa taking inspiration from each other—and the good vibes and irresistible grooves they produced ensured that the continent’s sounds would continue to sweep the globe. Artists from across the continent took inspiration from South Africa's amapiano, with Nigerian stars like Sarz and Lojay leaning heavily into the made-for-the-streets sound on their smash hit “Monalisa”. Nigerian megastar Burna Boy made his return to the top of the charts with his latest album, Love, Damini, fuelled by the summer hit “Last Last”. The Afrobeats wave continued its global takeover, as Fireboy DML’s Ed Sheeran-assisted remix of “Peru” peaked at No. 1 on the UK Top 40 charts. Here, you’ll find more of what Apple Music users across the African continent just couldn’t stop streaming. Hear something that moves you? Add it to your library.
