The O'Jays Essentials

The O'Jays Essentials

What The Temptations were to Detroit in the '60s, The O'Jays were to Philadelphia in the '70s. Formed in 1958 in Ohio, The O'Jays really took off once they caught the ear of Philadelphia producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff; together they made funk and soul that was sweetly orchestrated and showbiz-savvy. Although The O'Jays sang about romance and celebration, they didn't avoid social comment, and their hits were just as likely to examine the disillusionment and anger of African Americans in the years following the civil rights movement.
