Scott Harris: The Songwriters

The sound of Japanese anime in the ‘00s leaned toward the uptempo. Opening and closing themes for most of the decade's hit series highlighted driving rock numbers from some of Japan's biggest bands, such as Asian Kung-Fu Generation and The Alfee. Even groups known for mellower output, like Ikimonogakari and supercell, cranked up the energy for their contributions to anime shows. It wasn't a one-note texture, though: Electronic projects such as UVERworld and POLYSICS contributed to the varied feel between shows. As the shows plunged ahead, the music did, too.
