M83 Essentials

The Los Angeles-based M83 formed in France in 2001. The duo—Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau—released two buzzy synth albums in the early aughts that recalled the krautrock bands of the '70s and early '80s synth-poppers. When Fromageau split, Gonzalez kept the name and M83 slowly morphed into an actual rock band. By the '08 album Saturdays = Youth, Gonzalez, with his hushed vocals and ethereal, mounting instrumentation, had fully embraced dream-pop and shoegaze. M83 continues to tour and record and also compose soundtracks for films, such as Tom Cruise's Oblivion.
