Life of Agony Essentials

Life of Agony’s career longevity is easy to explain. Since debuting with 1993’s River Runs Red—an album balancing hardcore’s heft, punk’s verve and alternative metal’s snarling intricacies—the Brooklyn band have constantly strived to redefine heavy music’s limits. Singer Mina Caputo’s jawing, growling vocal style has expanded to include more melodic fare (the vulnerable, crooning midtempo ballad “My Mind Is Dangerous”), while the band have dabbled in throttling melodic punk (“Weeds”), grungy space rock (“Let’s Pretend”) and pile-driving progressive metal (2019’s The Sound of Scars).
