Guitar-driven rhythms set the dance-friendly pace, while the genre's lead instrument, the pennywhistle, added a distinct African vibe. Though kwela was largely instrumental, artists like Miriam Makeba and Donald Kachamba added solid, harmony-heavy vocal numbers.
