KiDi Essentials

Born in Accra in 1993, KiDi grew up just as contemporary Afropop started to take definitive shape, running through influences from dancehall, highlife, hip-hop and soul that whetted an omnivorous musical appetite. The nexus of these sonic influences has made the singer (Dennis Nana Dwamena) a certified musical polymath adept at pulling killer hooks from the intersection of multiple musical styles, as he did on his classic singles like “Adiepena” and the Davido- and Mayorkun-featuring remix of “Odo”. After winning the 2015 edition of the musical reality TV show MTN Hitmaker, KiDi inked a deal with Lynx Entertainment, which released his 2019 debut album Sugar to acclaim, while 2020 extended play Blue was a full-throated creative detour into textured highlife. It is on his sophomore album, 2021’s The Golden Boy, that KiDi lays down his gauntlet as the Ghanaian act of the moment. Largely self-produced and with a lean guest list, The Golden Boy has airtight melodies, hyper Afropop jams and thumping reggae-and-soul melds to uplift and thrill his audience.
