Julie London Essentials

Julie London is well known as an actress, but during the ‘50s her career as a torch singer quickly supplanted her reputation as a screen star. She harnessed her unhurried delivery, insouciant tone, and smoky timbre with a mixture of naïveté and cynicism. Her smouldering performance on “Cry Me a River” from her 1955 debut album remains her signature song, establishing her mix of vulnerability and emotional remove. She could play the coy ingénue à la Eartha Kitt on “Daddy”, but tackling the Skeeter Davis country hit “End of the World” with hushed regret makes plain she could masterfully tug heartstrings, too.
