A genre already popular in Cape Town and beyond during the '50s and '60s, jazz in South Africa experienced something of a revival in the ‘90s. Artists like West Nkosi, Basil Coetzee and Dennis Mpale raised the bar with unusual tempos, a dash of local folklore, extraordinary musicianship—and even electronic music patterns.
