Even with all their sun-kissed exuberance, there's a hint of melancholy lurking in this L.A. band's raucous indie pop. The title of their 2011 debut, Never Trust a Happy Song, says it all: While the clap-happy sing-along "Tongue Tied" has all the folk glee of an Edward Sharpe dance party, there's a love story there that never gets resolved. Lead vocalist Christian Zucconi trembles like The Cure's Robert Smith on boisterous rockers such as "Colours", but by boosting up the beat and turning on the glam for peppy synth-pop anthems like "Ways To Go" and "Good Morning", they shed some of that early cynicism.
