Born in 1962, South African producer and singer-songwriter Arthur Mafokate began his career as a backup dancer, transitioning to music in the early '90s. His breakout came in 1995 with "Kaffir"—the first and biggest kwaito hit. Speaking to the political changes of the time, the song also established a new genre of music and crowned Arthur as the King of Kwaito. His career was punctuated with hits like "Sika Lekhekhe", "Mnike" and "Daai Ding", which showcased his earworm hooks and rippling, percussive rhythms, as well as "Oyi Oyi", which scooped up song of the year at the 1998 South African Music Awards.
