About U.S. Maple

With Al Johnson on vocals, Todd Rittmann and Mark Shippy on guitars, and Pat Samson on drums, the experimental foursome U.S. Maple came together in 1995, spawned from the ashes of former bands like Shorty. Intent on playing complex anti-arrangements, the group employed then-unknown Jim O’Rourke to produce their debut LP, LONG HAIR IN THREE STAGES. After two records with Midwest indie label Skin Graft, the band moved to premier Chicago imprint Drag City, releasing three records for that label in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Their 2003 release, PURPLE ON TIME, was their most accessible, but also proved to be their final work together.
