About Samthing Soweto

South African singer Samthing Soweto spent years honing his craft before breaking through with his 2019 album Isphithiphithi. His journey into music began under difficult circumstances—after being arrested for armed robbery as a teenager, he spent time in juvenile detention, where he often sang while incarcerated. Upon his release, he returned to high school and co-founded the a cappella group The Soil. Soweto soon branched off to pursue a solo career, releasing his debut, This N That Without Tempo, in 2010, followed by 2014’s Eb’suku EP. His profile rose further in 2017 when he appeared on Sun-El Musician’s “Akanamali”, a track that won multiple honours at the 2018 South African Music Awards. Isphithiphithi followed the next year, as did an appearance on British singer Kindness’ Something Like a War. 2020’s Danko! was a quick diversion into amapiano. He took a significant break between albums, and returned in 2025 with the emotionally gripping Touch Is a Move (Good Morning).
