About Phats & Small
The production team of Phats and Small found much of their success in lending a hand to the European rebirth of disco and progressive house. Brighton, U.K., natives Russell Small and Jason Phats gained popularity with the dance singles "Turn Around" and "Feel Good." Russell began his DJing career at 13 when he started his own mobile DJ business, being escorted by his father to weddings and parties. Small acknowledges the business did not last because of his dislike of slow ballads and his inability to stop swearing over the mic. Odds against him, Small turned his focus to DJing and house music. How exactly Russell and Jason met depends on who you ask, though the two have jokingly said they met on a Brighton dancefloor and instantly knew it was a production match made in heaven. The disco-driven 1999 release "Turn Around" reached number two in the national charts and was followed closely with the similar "Feel Good." In September of that same year, they did several remixes of Earth Wind and Fire's "September" and released it under the title "September 99." Phats and Small are often grouped with other commercial dance artist and longtime friend Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook), as they are both from Brighton and have brought a lot of attention to the English suburb. Phats and Small have brought large numbers to the town with their monthly club night, Mutant Disco, at Brighton's Zap Club. In 1999, Phats and Small released their first full-length, Now Phats What I Small Music, with the help of singer Big Ben, whose voice is featured on both "Turn Around" and "Feel Good." ~ Diana Potts
