About Donald Martino
Donald Martino (1931-2005) was an American composer of the post-World War II generation who was best-known for his serial compositions, though his later development showed some signs of Romantic influences. A student of Roger Sessions and Milton Babbitt, Martino won a Fulbright Fellowship and traveled to Italy, where he absorbed the expressive 12-tone idiom of Luigi Dallapiccola. In 1974, Martino won the Pulitzer Prize for his Notturno, a chamber work which became one of his most performed and recorded compositions. His career as a composition professor took him to the New England Conservatory of Music, Brandeis University, and Harvard University.
