A native of the Homestead neighborhood in northeastern Houston, Michael “5000” Watts is the founder of Swishahouse Records--the famed label responsible for putting out such artists as Slim Thug, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, and Chamillionaire. A DJ by trade, Watts was inspired by the late DJ Screw’s psychedelic mixing methods, and, alongside O.G. Ron C, brought the technique (known as chop & screw) to northside Houston rappers. Michael “5000” Watts is one of the foremost purveyors of the the new subgenre. and has famously chopped and screwed albums by Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz, Young Jeezy, Paul Wall, Lil Wayne, and Juvenile.
