About Boo

Boo! were one of the more original South African alternative bands of the late 1990s. Forming in Johannesburg in 1996, the band brought together the talents of Chris Chameleon (vocals, bass), Ampie Omo (guitar, trumpet, keyboards)and Princess Leonie (drums). Boo!'s music (given the moniker "Monkey punk" by the band) was a bizarre mixture of punk rhythms, nonsense lyrics and Chameleon's garbled vocal delivery, topped by their stage antics. The infectious silliness of Boo! made them immensely popular in South Africa, yet their undoubted musicianship also helped them to avoid being labelled simply as a novelty act. The band released their debut cassette Banana Flava in 1997; the album Pineapple Flava - subtitled "Monki Punk" - followed in 1998. The disc rose to prominence thanks to the airplay given to their tracks "OO AA" and "Lucki". A year later, the group issued a video, Cherrie, and The Three Boodists album; 2000 saw the release of Seventies, Eighties, Nineties, Naughties. ~ Jonathan Lewis
