Jaco van der Merwe (lyricist and rapper), Peach van Pletzen (engineer and producer) and Louis Minnaar (visual artist, music video director and VJ) make up Bittereinder, a Pretoria-based outfit known as much for their aggressive electro-rap as they are for their provocative audio-visual performances. Since the release of their critically lauded debut album ’N Ware Verhaal in 2010, which earned them a SAMA for Best Alternative Album straight off the bat, they’ve established themselves as a powerhouse trio through dark social commentary, reverberating basslines and conceptually innovative live shows. The trio’s visually striking music videos (“Kwaad Naas” feat. Shane Durrant) and notable collaborations over the years (“Slechte Mensen” feat. Tim Beumers and “Kulkuns” feat. Chris Chameleon) find Bittereinder’s musical roots planted firmly in postmodern bilingual lyrical irony, underpinned by a bouncing beat.
