The Most Wanted

The Most Wanted

Just a little under half of JAZZWRLD and Thukuthela’s The Most Wanted (see “Vuka”, “Uzizwa Kanjan”, “uValo”, “Tholukuthi (Clap Song)” and “uMA weNGANE”) existed as monster hits before the project’s release. Those are the songs that, in a very short period, catapulted the duo into superstardom as leaders in 3-step, a South African genre that features notes of amapiano, Afro-pop, Afro-tech and Afro-jazz, and is driven by a signature three-kick rhythm and muffled backing vocals that feel like suppressed emotion clawing its way to the surface. The Most Wanted is literal in that way, a testament to both the duo’s versatility and the genre’s breadth. Lyrically, the project focuses on matters of the heart, strategically detouring into spirituality through a range of voices and co-producers. Herein you’ll find MaWhoo, Dlala Thukzin, Sykes, Major League DJz and many more. Per that list of well-established contributors, some songs brim with rattling percussion, claps and layers of synths fused with live instrumentation, while others lean towards minimalism. “iS’Babazo”, for example, is all acoustic guitar and croaking percussion, while “uMoya” is laced with Limpopo’s reigning lekompo style, flush with genre’s trademark Auto-Tuned vocals.
