Room 37

Room 37

Following the sprawling odyssey of his 28-track album Eternity PatricKxxLee returns with 2023’s Room 37 an introspective masterpiece on the highs of hedonistic excess and the lows that inevitably follow. Here, PatricKxxLee eschews the maximalism of his previous projects for hazy, synth-based contemplations on lost love, tenuous sanity and the toll of heavy nights and early mornings. “You love mixing all your pain with ecstasy/I only call you when I’m high and don’t wanna sleep”, he admits on “Pure Dopamine”. “Six”, which features Blxckie, is an 808-heavy number that sees the two rappers tag team a haunting beat while waxing lyrical about their pursuits during a night out. Tracks like “Delilah & I” and “Gravity” are sparse, reverb-drenched shouts into the void in which PatricKxxLee admits that no amount of substances or making out can keep the heaviness of being at bay. “I don’t want another line/I’ll pass it, wait I’ll have it”, the rapper contemplates on the former, while the latter details the inevitable comedown from an ill-fated relationship. The album’s centrepiece, “Last Call”, features Sjava and an upbeat Afrobeat melody with xylophone taps and thumping kick drums—yet behind the cheerful melody lies a story about a night out that drags on way too long: “Last night, me I passed out so angazi [I don’t know] what you’re talking about”. Production from the artist alongside KindlyNxsh, Cash Khali, BrotherKupa and burningforestboy offers the terra firma for PatricKxxLee to embark on an internal odyssey, replete with introspection and empathy.
