Listen to the Kids

OSKIDO’s omnipresence in South Africa’s dance music scene is a product of his adaptability. As the title of his 2022 EP suggests, he always keeps his ear on the streets and stays on the pulse of new sounds. Roping in young talent, he explores amapiano’s wide spectrum of production styles. On the soulful techno-tinged “Ngizimisele”, Nkosazana Daughter’s effortless falsetto glides over atmospheric pads—as is the case with vocalist Ze2 on “Emaweni” and “My Person”. On “Sathane”, OSKIDO and vocalist Mthandazo Gatya pray over throbbing pads that carry Deep Sen and KingTalkzin’s piano-tech production. Young Stunna joins Niniola for a remix of the 2021 single “Banky Banky” that comes with a redefined bass and rhythm. On “Speaking in Tongues”, the OG joins forces with King Tone SA and Celimpilo for sgija, a ’piano variant that is chiefly instrumental and is defined by deeper basslines and a slower tempo. King Tone SA makes another appearance on “Mo Tik Tok”, a playful ode to the video-sharing platform that’s fertile ground for amapiano and other genres of music—and one of the spaces where OSKIDO connects with younger audiences and stays up to date.
