In the Building

Hillzy’s ambidexterity carries In the Building—his bravado is believable and he is sincere and thoughtful in his love songs. “Look how I set the bar/I got nobody at par,” he sings on the hook for “Long Street”, a song in which he uses the cornerstone of Cape Town’s nightlife as a metaphor in his proclamation of having bars. Fitting, as Hillzy spent about a decade in Cape Town, where he built his name as a prolific musician with a constant stream of viral visuals, covers and projects. Now back home in Zimbabwe, Hillzy feels more in touch with himself than ever, as he sings and raps more in his home language, Shona, on the opening song “Nharo”. When not rapping or singing over trap beats on the project, he is singing his heart out on the pop ballad “Only You”. Songs like “Better for Myself”, “Chargie” and “Signs” see Hillzy suavely adapt his style accordingly to suit Afrobeats-leaning production.
