This under-the-radar 1973 jewel captures the maestro of melancholy down and out in Europe—excepting "Queen Victoria", which he recorded in a Tennessee hotel room. The material, mainly from Songs From a Room, is bleak, but his delivery is impeccable. Highlights include a talismanic "Bird on the Wire", a graceful guitar improvisation and "Please Don't Pass Me By (A Disgrace)", in which Cohen numbers himself among the world's outcasts during a cathartic London sing-along.
