In the ’70s, Quebec songsmith Richard Séguin made a name for himself as an idiosyncratic folk artist, but on 1985’s Double vie (“Double Life”), he reveals a dramatically different side of his musical personality. Séguin emerges as a straight-up rock ’n’ roller, albeit one with a surfeit of gravitas and sophistication. The choppy guitars and colourful keyboards of “Gentil, gentil” show a fondness for New Wave, whilst he sounds almost Springsteen-esque on “J’te cherche”. Wherever his muse leads him, he goes with assurance.
