1020 Cartel’s revelatory African trap sound updates Maskandi traditions with spoken-word poetry and hip-hop. On their debut project, iSambulo, Mzukulu, Nue_Sam, Anzo and Yallunder craft 10 genre-defying sounds. The tracks are marked by producer Ruff’s Zulu rhythms and sinewy basslines as well as the crew’s soulful melodies and gripping prose. Guests include Bongane Sax on “Amahora”, and legendary guitarist Madala Kunene on “Isangoma”.
