Wynton has always embraced rigorous post-bop riffing, recording thrilling live takes of songs like “Green Chimneys” and “Au Privave” throughout his career. But he's supplemented these blowing sessions with multiple-movement works later in his career, like the locomotive-themed album Big Train (written for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra) and The Abyssinian Mass, an ambitious opus with a big band and chorus.
