Selects: Kungs

To celebrate the release of his uplifting Club Azur project, which began as a pandemic-born livestream series and became a formal album, the French DJ/producer takes over our biweekly Selects playlist with his favorite feel-good disco tracks. “The world is facing another round of dark days,” the Marseille native tells Apple Music. “It might seem ludicrous to some, but as a musician I feel entitled to share as much positive energy as possible.” Here, that energy takes the form of chunky, nostalgic club edits (Villa’s remix of Joe Smooth’s “Promise Land”); twinkling, transportive techno (Burial and Four Tet’s “Moth”); and soft-spoken spiritual homilies about the power of perseverance (Carlita’s groovy interpretation of Chloé Caillet’s “Love Ain’t Over”). The latter gestures at the spirit of hopefulness that has always existed at disco’s core. “It has always been a kick-starter for togetherness,” Kungs says. “[‘Love Ain’t Over’] is all about pushing through and never giving up.”
