Doo-Wop Essentials

A musical style that emerged in the ’40s and changed the course of American popular music, doo wop leaves no doubts about the magic that can be created by voices working in harmony. While many of the genre’s quintessential examples feature other instruments, doo-wop’s greatest were masters of a capella, using their voices to provide a range from tenors up top to the bass singers filling out the bottom. The music’s sophistication contrasted with its humble origins as The Ravens, The Ink Spots, and The Orioles took what they learned about group singing from churches and brought it to street corners, stages, and studios, forging a path for black R&B acts into the pop mainstream in the process. Even after doo wop’s popularity waned, the intricacy and grace of acts like The Moonglows and The Skyliners left an indelible mark on the sound of such ‘60s hitmakers as The Four Seasons and The Beach Boys.
