In the first half of the '60s, Del Shannon's milestone singles brought more mystery, melancholy and suspense to the table than rock 'n' roll had ever encountered before. There was a palpable sense of danger and urgency in the tortured wail of "Runaway" and the drama-filled gallop of "Hats Off to Larry", egged on by the keening sound of Max Crook's trailblazing electric-keyboard lines. Of course, Del could also let loose and rock out with the best of them whenever he wanted—just witness the raw, rip-'em-up roar of his take on "Do You Wanna Dance".
