Charlie Brown Jr. entered the Brazilian rock scene with a bang, spewing fireballs of ska-punk infused throughout their successful 1997 debut Transpiração Contínua Prolongada. But the group—fronted by singer Chorão—could also tone the guitars down, rapping to relaxed waves of reggae and dub. Their songs encapsulated the fast pace of urban life and sunny spells on the Brazilian beachfront, as easily as raw sonic assaults and themes of young romance. Chorão's passing may have seen an abrupt end to the band, but their legacy—like the vibrant energy of the skate culture which inspired them—will never rest.
